Alpha United and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) battled to an exhausting finish in the final of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League – Super Four Knockout Competition with Alpha emerging victorious.
The Alpha United team is now $500,000 richer after winning 5 – 3 on penalty kicks against GDF who will receive the $300,000 second prize. Prior to the final, Rosignol humbled Milerock 2 – 0 to win the $200,000third place prize while Milerock won $100,000 for placing fourth.
It was a see-saw battle for most of the Alpha United/GDF encounter which got dull at times since the side could not formulate other plays to get past each other’s defenses. As such, the game progressed to extra time where neither team could gain the upper hand which led the game to a penalty shootout.
The Alpha United players were able to hold their nerves and successfully score all five attempts while the opposition faltered twice and got bumped into the runner up spot.
Earlier in the night, Rosignol United played a tactical, well-controlled game to get past Milerock in the third place battle.
Rosignol’s Curtis Moore scored a first half goal and his teammate Tyson Carmichael scored in the second half to discern the side that played better football on the night.
