The Guyana Chess Federation will stage a one-day Rapid Chess tournament on Sunday in Linden as the GCF moves to decentralize the sport.
Sunday’s tournament is set to take place at the Constabulary Recreation Hall, Constabulary Compound, Linden
.
President of the GCF Shiv Nandalall, had told Stabroek Sport earlier this year, that he was looking forward to spreading the game throughout the country.
According to Nandalall, the idea to stage a tournament in Linden came about after Lindener Malcolm Archer, participated in one of the federation’s tournaments held earlier this year.
Nandalall sai
d after discussions with Archer, the federation quickly grabbed the opportunity to take the game outside of Georgetown and decided to organise a tournament for chess players in the Linden area.
Registration for the tournament will begin at 9:30hrs while matches are scheduled to begin one hour later.
Participants under the age of 18 years will be admitted free of charge while all others will be required to pay a registration fee of $200.
The seven-round, Swiss System competition will be played in the senior and junior categories and matches will have a time limit of 40 minutes per game.
Players with tournament-sized chess sets are requested to walk with them also.
Nandalall noted that while the regular Georgetown players are not prohibited from playing in the tournament, the focus will be mainly on those players from the Linden area and its environs.
The tournament is also being used to evaluate the level of chess in Linden which will aid the federation in determining how to go about promoting the game within the area.
Apart from Linden, Nandalall said the federation also plans to stage tournaments at Bartica but
Stressed that implementing such a goal would take serious planning and organising.
Because of the short time it takes to complete a game, Rapid Chess also known as “Blitz” chess is a form of the game where players are given shorter periods of time to complete a game and as such tournaments can be concluded in one day.
The tournament will be sponsored by Kei-Shar’s Gift Shoppe and trophies and chess sets are at stake for both senior and junior players.
Interested players can contact Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 or Nandalall on 225-8270 during office hours for further details.
