A bystander was shot during a struggle between a fleeing suspect and a policeman at Longden Street, Stabroek on Monday night.
Dwayne Dodson, 34, of no fixed place of abode was shot and injured to his left side and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) for treatment. Police said that the incident occurred at about 8:40pm on Monday and it is being investigated. The suspect who was fleeing was captured and is in police custody.
In a press statement yesterday, the police said that investigations have revealed that an armed police constable, who was on duty at the Mobile Outpost at Stabroek Market Square, had arrested a man following a report of alleged assault made against him by a female and placed him in custody at the Mobile Outpost.
“While arrangements were being made to have the suspect taken to the Brickdam Police Station, he ran out of the Mobile Outpost in an attempt to escape but was recaptured after being pursued by the police constable and public-spirited persons,” said the release. “At Longden Street, while being taken back to the Mobile Outpost, the suspect attacked the police constable and attempted to take away his firearm. A struggle ensued between the suspect and the police rank during which a round was discharged which struck Dwayne Dodson,” it added.
It said that Dodson, who a police source said had no fixed place of abode, was taken to the GPH for medical attention. The suspect in the assault matter is in police custody.
