The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development will be hosting what it calls ‘awareness fairs’ in several communities from today to May 29, with the aim of facilitating inclusion of a larger number of residents in awareness activities.
According to a press release from the ministry, several government agencies will participate in the fairs, including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Local Government.
The fairs are open to the general public and will showcase and offer essential services free, including glucose testing, blood pressure testing, eye screening, edutainment on drugs and adolescent issues, educational games and face painting for children.
According to the release, there will be awareness fairs in Region 6 today and Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00pm at Cumberland/Sheet Anchor/Palmyra/No.2 at Fort Ordnance Primary and Alness/ Ulverston at Alness Race Track, respectively.
In Region 3 the fairs are billed for May 21 and 22 at Uitvlugt/Stewartville/ Zeelugt/Tuschen at Uitvlugt Community Centre and La Grange/Bagotville at La Grange Primary respectively, again from 2:00-6:00pm.
The fair in Region 5 will be held on May 28 at the Bush Lot Community Ground from 2:00-7:30pm and the Region 4 fair is billed for May 29 at Clonbrook Primary from 2:00-6:00pm.
The release also noted that the ministry has received support under the Government of Guyana, United Nations Development Programme, Enhanced Public Trust Security and Inclusion Project to expand its community development programming. Under this initiative, the ministry is working with 25 communities from regions 3,4,5,6 and 10 to enhance their capacity to effectively address priority issues and concerns through community-led social and economic projects. During February and March, the ministry hosted community dialogues in 20 communities across the target regions. As part of their social projects, 13 communities proposed awareness sessions to enhance the capacity of members of the communities to address prevalent community issues.
