Teckle Ellis, one of three Jamaican men arrested on Monday after a police raid at Cummings Lodge, was yesterday charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Ellis, 34, pleaded not guilty to charges when they were read by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court. It was alleged that on May 9, at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, he had in his possession eight live rounds of .45 ammunition and seventeen .38 rounds, without being the holder of a licence, as well as a .45 Glock Pistol, without being the holder of a firearm licence at the time. He was remanded after bail was denied.
In addition to two other Jamaican nationals, two Guyanese were also held during the raid.
When asked if there were any witnesses in the matter, Prosecutor H. Anthony initially responded in the negative.
However, after the matter had been stood down for a few minutes, she stated that only one of the two witnesses was present.
Anthony also told the court that the accused had other matters pending in court, including that of illegal entry.
She later objected to bail, saying Ellis posed a flight risk while also noting the gravity of the offence.
Ellis was remanded until June 10.
