New Silver City Secondary School, with 93 points, yesterday lifted the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) trophy at the annual World Athletic Day track meet held by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) at the Eve Leary Sports Club ground .
The meet, which was organised for schoolchildren in the Under-15 and 18 categories, saw New Amsterdam Multilateral School placing second with 67 points while Campbeville Secondary School 39 and Bladen Hall Multilateral School 33 were third and fourth respectively.
The boys Under-18 100 metres was contested under the “Final by time rule” instituted by the AGG.
In this rule the person with the fastest time in the heats will be declared the winner.
Cortez Fraser yesterday triumphed with the fastest time of the three heats clocking 11.0s to take the top spot while Keon Lynch 11.1s and Christopher Hyderkhan 11.4s were second and third respectively.
Malcolm Walcott won the boys’ Under-18 800 metres with a tactical run while Ornesto Thomas and Quacy Simpson placed second and third respectively.
The Under-18 boys’ long jump was won by Marlon Moshett who jumped a distance of 6.03 metres while Nigel Williams could only manage a below par distance of 5.43 metres for the second position.
Kevin Ramlall won a closely-contested boys’ Under-15 150 metres in a time of 18.7s with Juwan Westfield 18.8s and Cuddy Holder 19.2s taking second and third places respectively.
The 2000 metres Under-15 boys’ walk-race was highly competitive and resulted in Charlton Lewis winning in a time of 14:35.37s while Kester Duke 14:38.50s and Andre Foster 15:35.44s trailed in second and third positions respectively.
On the distaff side, Jevina Sampson dominated the field in the girls’ Under-15 150 metres as she clocked 19.6s to win the event while Lewanna Ross 20.6s and Khaleria Harris 21.3s trailed in second and third places respectively.
Two-time gold medalist at the Carifta Games, Jevina Straker, easily ran away with the girls’ Under-18 1500 metres in a time of 5:14.9s while Shanika Chaoman 5:34.6s and Adama Roberts 5:44.2s came in second and third respectively.
Tasnica Lovell jumped away with the girls’ Under-18 long jump with a distance of 4.64 metres while Ieashsha Parris 4.35m and Shamain Daniels 4.22m placed second and third respectively.
Carifta Games representative, Melissa Byass continued her dominating style of 400 metres running when she won that event in a time of 1:00.1s leaving Shenne Subrattie to trail in second place with a time of 1:12.9s.
Meanwhile, all roads will lead to Linden this weekend for the staging of the President/Jefford Classic where Commonwealth Games double medalist in the 400 metres, Aliann Pompey is expected to make an appearance on the track at home for the first time since the start of the new millennium.
