Social activist Mark Benschop yesterday cross-examined Assistant Superintendent Rishi Das, when his trial over obstructing the use of the road with his vehicle commenced before Magistrate Chandra Sohan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Das, who is attached to the Central Police Station, Berbice, was the first prosecution witness who was called to the stand.
In his evidence-in-chief, he spoke of being attached to the Ruimveldt Police Station on December 15, 2010 and receiving a call that the accused had violated a traffic rule by obstructing the road at the dumpsite, Cemetery Road, Georgetown.
After giving his testimony, Das was briefly re-examined by the prosecution and cross-examined by Benschop.
The prosecution has two more witnesses to call.
The allegation against Benschop is that on December 15, 2010 on Cemetery Road, while driving motor pickup GLL 3101, he caused the said vehicle to remain at rest in such a manner likely to cause obstruction to other road users.
The defendant has since denied the charge. He was sent on his own recognizance. The trial continues on June 7.
