A Community Policing Group member and his wife were refused bail when they appeared at the Springlands Court before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud, charged with possession of an unlicensed fiearm.
The court heard that Rishiram Netchandra, 37, and Hemwattie Seorajaye, 27, of Number. 60 Village, Corentyne reportedly had in their possession a firearm without being holders of a license. The couple is scheduled to return to the Number 51 Court tomorrow.
Attorney Ramesh Rajkumar, who represented the couple, made an unsuccessful application for bail to be granted.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Grant argued that bail should be refused because of the nature and gravity of the charge. He submitted too that police are investigating a robbery and that ballistics tests are being carried out to determine if the gun was used.
He told Magistrate Persaud also that the attorney for the defendants “did not advance special reasons for bail to be granted.”
The facts of the case, according to the prosecutor, were that around 8:30 pm on May 10, police acted on information and conducted a search of the couple’s home. He said the gun was found stashed in a bag in the kitchen cupboard.
