President Bharrat Jagdeo announced today that government will pay out $300M in severance to sugar workers from Diamond who had taken legal action against the state for withholding the monies.
Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh was briefed on the development earlier today at Cabinet and has been asked to find the money. It is expected that the money would be released to GuySuCo sometime next week and later paid out to the workers.
The President met with the Diamond workers, numbering around 300 to personally deliver the news. He charged that critics of the administration will put a political spin on the payout.
Jagdeo also told workers that the court decision could have gone either way; in favour of the state or the workers. He pledged continued assistance for the sugar industry while lamenting the deep financial troubles of GuySuCo.
