Chief Instructor of the Guyana Wado Ryu Karate Association Sensei Winston Dunbar said he was pleased with the performances of the participants at last Sunday’s Junior Karate championships held at Banks DIH Sports Club at Thirst Park.
Sensei Dunbar said 40 students from Eccles Primary School, Mae’s School and Banks DIH centre took part in the one-day tournament which was also used to identify karatekas for the National Junior karate Championships billed for May 29 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
“The standard was very good and we look forward to the students going on to do well in the National championships at the end of the month,” he added.
Dunbar thanked Banks DIH who was represented by Communications Manager Troy Peters, for its continued support.
He also expressed gratitude to two former students Michael Mendonca and Terrance Clarke who donated the medals.
Peters, who delivered the feature address, urged the participants to be good ambassadors of the sport.
He encouraged them to display a high level of discipline in their quest for success.
President of the Guyana Wado Ryu Association, Darren Nurse and other members of the executives assisted in the presentation of prizes.
The results were: Over 14 female in first place was Thresha Cordis with Mahadevi Prasad securing the second position.
Sanjay Veerasammy won the boys 12-14 years from Asif Kaladeen (second) and Adam Ferouz third.
Female 12-14: Paulette Josiah (first), Salima Bhagwandeen (2nd) and Dominique Babb (3rd).
Male Heavy 9-11: Dwight Peters (1st), Mark Persami (2nd) Alex Winters (3rd) and Shemar Hope (4th).
Male Light 9-11: Noah Ferouz (1st), Matthew Persami (2nd), Michael English (3rd) and Matthew Yusuf (4th). Female 9-11: Samela Britton (1st) and Shania James (2nd).
6-8 Mixed Heavy: Daryn Walrond (1st), Serena Kumar (2nd), Shay Britton (3rd), Isiah Jackson (4th) and Earl Wilson (5th).
6-8 Mixed light: Ahmad Khan (1st), Jon Ramsingh (2nd), Sierra Evans (3rd), Devindra Krishnalall (4th) and Rennie Glasgow (5th).
