Dear Editor,
My family and I have recently rediscovered the Promenade Gardens, after taking some overseas visitors there a few times this year. It is a true oasis in the middle of Georgetown and is one of the few places, or maybe the only one, where one can spend some quiet time among a profusion of beautiful flowers and plants without the piles and drifts of garbage that are ever-present elsewhere. Special thanks are due to Republic Bank for sponsoring its restoration to a place of which Guyanese can be proud.
My only disappointment is that we recently found that when wedding parties are photographing in the Gardens, the security guards forbids members of the public from entering. I’d like to ask the authorities to revisit this rule. The Gardens have so many walkways and partitions that a wedding party can occupy one section in privacy while other persons can relax in other areas without intruding. In addition, I don’t think it is quite fair to have a public spot abruptly closed off for a private event. It just feels such a disappointment when one is looking forward to visiting the Gardens and then cannot enter. It is worse yet if you advertise the Gardens to visitors, take them there, and are then prohibited. I really do beg the authorities to reconsider.
Yours faithfully,
