Defending national champions Rose Hall Town Metro were crowned female cricket champions of Berbice when they defeated Tucber Park by 56 runs at the Area “H” Ground, Rosehall to lift the Millie Lewis Memorial Trophy.
The victory gave the home team an unassailable 2-0 lead in best of three-match series sponsored by Peter Lewis Construction Firm.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, RHT Metro rallied to 149 all out in 35 of their allotted 40 overs then they bowled the opposition out for 93.
RHT Metro’s skipper Shemaine Campbelle top scored with 30 and received support from Nikita Toney (20), Jacquelin Singh (15), Trisanna Cort (12) and Erva Giddings (10).
Teneisha Leonard was the pick of the bowlers for Tucber Park with 4 – 45 while West Indies pacers Subrina Munroe bagged 1 – 27 and Tremayne Smartt finished with 1 – 26.
In reply, the Tucber Park players were unable to find answers to the Rose Hall Town Metro combined bowling combination of pace and spin. Smartt was the only player to put up any resistance with 25 while Steffi Rodney (13) was the only other player able to reach double figures as they were dismissed in 25 overs.
Campbelle delivered a terrific all-round performance finishing with 3 – 21 adding to her top score of 30 while Giddings, Phaffiana Millington and Shenella Mc Bean eaech took two wickets for RHT Metro.
RHT Metro walked away with the $30,000 top prize and Tucber Park settled for the $15,000 runner up prize.
Campbelle, who was adjudged as the player of the final received $5,000.
Following the showdown, President of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) congratulated the winners while urging all the female cricketers in Berbice to work harder at their game especially the mental and physical aspect.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the board Hilbert Foster hailed the Tournament as a historic one for Berbice as it was the first female tournament in the history of Berbice. He especially extended gratuity to the sponsor who sponsored it in memory of Millie Lewis who was the mother of Peter Lewis, the Managing Director of Peter Lewis Construction Company.
