Home economists from across the country were recently encouraged to promote healthy eating through entrepreneurship.
At the general members meeting of the Guyana Association of Home Economists, held in the conference room of the Linden Business Centre/Linden Enterprise Network (LEN), Head Teacher of the Wismar Christianburg Secondary School Cleveland Thomas told the members that they have the required skills to become entrepreneurs
The meeting was attended by teachers from Georgetown, the East Coast of Demerara, the East Bank, West Coast, West Bank and Linden. Thomas reminded the participants that home economics and home management teachers have the requisite skills and knowledge to establish businesses in the fields of cosmetology, the garment industry and the culinary arts.
On the latter field, he noted that they could promote good eating habits through their businesses, while pointing out that currently there are many some creole shops that are guilty of selling unhealthy foods in unhygienic surroundings. “Half of those people are not qualified like you are, half of the foods are high in fat and salt, high in cholesterol, low in protein and carrying high prices,” said Thomas.
The interactive session, which was staged for the first time in Linden, was designed to address the concerns of Home Economists in Guyana.
Also addressing the general meeting was Home Economics specialist Eleene Payne, who spoke at length on the versatility of cassava—a commodity she said was selected because it is readily available in the markets throughout Guyana. She noted that the product is relatively cheap and is easily digestible and as such home economists are being urged to utilise the ground provision more often during their food preparation process.
At the meeting cassava pizza, cassava roll and cassava and cheese puffs were prepared and displayed.
