A city businessman reportedly shot himself in the head early yesterday morning as he was driving home after “hanging out” at a Kitty bar.
Andre Khan, 36, of Lot 2 George Street, Georgetown succumbed to a single gunshot wound before reaching the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Police said in a statement that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Khan “whose body was found around 03:45 hrs today in his motor vehicle PKK 1999 on Queen Street, Kitty, with a suspected gunshot injury to his head”.
Initial investigations, the police said, revealed that Khan, a licensed firearm holder, is suspected to have shot himself while driving his vehicle which later crashed into a parked car on the roadway.
The firearm has been recovered by the police and the body is at the George-town Hospital mortuary as the investigations continue.
Meanwhile, efforts by this newspaper to contact Khan’s wife Onika were futile. His neighbours were unable to provide any information on what might have led to the incident.
This newspaper understands that in recent times, Khan has been having personal problems and things might have climaxed resulting in his decision to take his own life. In the hours leading up to his death, Khan was a patron at a bar not far from where the incident occurred.
Residents in the area told Stabroek News that upon their arrival at the scene, Khan was the only one in the vehicle; he was in the driver’s seat and a gun was seen as well. The man, the residents said, had to have been shot while driving, and as a result, the vehicle ran off the road and hit an old unused car and another vehicle belonging to residents nearby. Both vehicles were parked at the side of the road.
Khan was the son of the owner of Best Buy Pharmacy on Regent Street.
