De Edward schoolgirl dies in accident, brother seriously hurt

A nine-year-old West Coast Berbice schoolgirl was killed and her brother seriously injured after they were hit by a speeding car this morning. Police are looking for the driver who jumped through the car window and escaped.

Jaswattie Ramnaugh of ย  De Edward Ketting, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital. She sustained serious head injuries. Her brother Vijay age seven has been transferred to the Georgetown Hospital in a serious condition. He sustained injuries to his head, feet and other parts of the body.

Reports are that the two left home for the Cotton Tree Primary School around 8 am but were sent back home by a teacher who told them that their end of term examination was scheduled for this afternoon.

While walking along the Cotton Tree public road, a speeding car coming from the opposite direction hit them head-on. The driver of the vehicle lost control while coming around a turn in the road.

Stabroek News was told that this is the second serious accident he has been involved in.
