You can now “like” the Parliament of Guyana. Also comment, view photos and keep updated on happenings within the Public Buildings’ hallowed halls now with its very own Facebook page.
And pretty soon, you can follow the National Assembly on Twitter and in the future, read its blog. These developments were announced by Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran last Friday. These channels are in addition to the Parliament’s official website.
Up to yesterday, 17 persons had “liked” Parliament on its Facebook page (Google: Parliament of Guyana Facebook). And in response to a comment, it was revealed that the Speaker’s Chair was a gift from the Government and People of India, made in India of Teak and was presented as an Independence Gift on 15th November, 1966. Notifications of sittings of the National Assembly were also posted as well as the Parliamentary Agenda.
“The objective of this page is to present information on the work of National Assembly. We look forward to as many friends and constructive comments as possible. The staff of the Parliament Office will only respond to comments about the business of the National Assembly and will leave political issues to be dealt with by members,” says a post on the page.
And with regards to webcasting, PNCR Chief Whip, Lance Carberry posed the question to Ramkarran last Friday and he responded that this will have to be examined.
