A 23-year-old West Bank Demerara man was fined $25,000 after he admitted to having in his possession a quantity of cannabis when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
Timothy Abrahim of 35 La Grange, West Bank Demerara refuted the statement given against him by Police Prosecutor Nauth, saying that he voluntarily went into his pockets and took out two packets of the illegal substance and handed them over when he was confronted by a police officer.
Presenting the facts Nauth told the court that on Monday around 11:00hrs, Corporal Wilson was on duty along the One Mile Road at Wismar, Linden when he saw the accused acting in a suspicious manner. He was confronted and searched and the two packets were taken out of his right pants pocket concealed in yellow and pink Ziplock bags.
He allegedly told the rank, “I just buy two joints fuh smoke.” The substance amounted to three and half grams.
Abrahim pleaded guilty with explanation and was fined $25,000 and ordered to do three months of community service or in lieu pay $10,000, failing which he would have to spend six months in prison.
