Over 50 public sector employees are participating in an ambitious information technology training programme in Central Rupununi, the Regional Administration of Region Nine has announced.
The employees are from the administrative, agricultural, public works, education and health departments of the region, the region said in news release.
According to Regional Executive Officer Ronald Harsawack, the regional administration has embarked on an information technology training programme which is designed for participants from the public sector as well as students and residents of the area. This training is being rolled out in phases, with Lethem and its environs benefitting initially before it is extended to the other sub-districts.
The training comprises modules in elementary, intermediate and advanced studies in the use of the micro computer and all accompanying sections in hardware and software.
The programme is designed as an interactive one, where each student accesses a micro computer and does practice lessons under the instruction of university-trained tutors. The programme is done for two hours every afternoon and students have the option of utilising the weekends to do practice lessons.
Harsawack said that the computer facility available in Lethem was made possible by the government through the Basic Needs Trust Fund. The computer laboratory was constructed late last year and has already seen over 100 students benefiting from it.
He said that at the end of the programme each participant is expected to be in a better position to embrace the information revolution currently being experienced. And he hopes that with the new skills acquired, production and efficiency will be significantly increased in the region.
