Seven-year-old Vijai Ramnauth, who along with his nine-year-old sister, was struck down by a speeding car at Cotton Tree West Coast Berbice, is in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
When this newspaper visited the Paediatric Ward of the hospital on Friday, Vijai was awake. He had earlier told this newspaper that he was feeling no pain, but he tearfully said that he wanted to go home.
On Monday morning, Vijai and his sister Jaswattie were on their way home from school, when they were hit by a Honda Fit, bearing the number plate PMM 8812, which after hitting them crashed into a concrete fence nearby. While Vijai survived, his sister was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital.
Initially, the driver had fled the scene by minibus, but surrendered to the police on the following day. The driver, Mahendra Ramanan, was on Friday remanded to prison after being charged with causing the girl’s death, among other offences.
