The National Volunteering Disability Programme is recruiting volunteers for its year-long pilot project when it launches the programme at the Umana Yana on Wednesday.
In a press release the National Commission on Disability (NCD) said the health and education ministers and current volunteers from the disabled community will be participating in the orientation exercise. Three volunteers will be selected from applicants within the local disability group to work on specific projects over the 12-month period. The programme provides the NCD with greater capacity to fulfil its mandate and work on specific aspects of the Persons with Disabilities Act 2010, such as promoting it to the public and government agencies and monitoring the adherence to this new disability legislation.
The NCD project is supported by VSO Guyana and it is funded by the European Union and CIDA. Attending participants have been undertaking training over the past three years in skills such as advocacy, financial management, organisations governance and disability rights as part of the VSO ABLE project.
