The police are investigating the murder of a 23-year-old miner who was stabbed by another miner at Big Creek Landing in the North West District.
According to the police, Charles Tang of Pomeroon River, Essequibo, was imbibing with another miner at Big Creek Landing, located some 45 km from the Port Kaituma water front, when an argument developed between them following which Tang was fatally stabbed.
The suspect, who was apparently injured, was arrested and is under guard at the Port Kaituma Hospital. The knife suspected to have been used in the incident has been recovered by the police.
Sources at Port Kaituma told this newspaper last evening that ranks stationed at the mining community travelled into the Big Creek area some time around lunch time yesterday after receiving information on the incident. The suspect and the victim were brought out of the mining location around 6:30 last evening.
According to a source, the suspect, said to be in his late 20s, is a known character who resides at Port Kaituma and he was wanted by the police in relation to an arson attack on a house at the 14 Miles backdam area some 3 years ago. Two children and their mother died following the attack, the source said. Tang’s body is at the Port Kaituma Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
