A Stabroek News staff member is hospitalized in a serious condition, as a result of a hit and run accident in which she was involved on Sunday night.
According to Chandramama Basdeo, called Urmila, she was on her way home from visiting her sister-in-law in Zeelugt, West bank Demerara, when a car [heading in her direction] overtook a minibus and hit her, flinging her in the air.
Basdeo said was “walking till in the grass corner”, when the incident occurred. She said everything happened so fast that she was unable to identify even the colour of the car, which fled the scene without stopping to render her assistance.
After lying unconscious on the road for some time, Basdeo related, she regained consciousness and began to call out for help. Eventually, a Canter truck came by and “some boys” placed her in the truck and transported her to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
She said the entire ordeal—from her being struck down to her arrival at the hospital—took place between 5 pm and 8 pm.
While Basdeo is in the Female Surgical Ward of the GPH nursing injuries to her face, collarbone, arms, and a broken left leg, the driver who almost killed her was still at large up to press time.
