The Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) is moving to facilitate 24-hour electricity supply to the Essequibo River islands of Leguan and Wakenaam, in keeping with a promise made in this year’s budget.
The company, in yesterday’s edition of the Guyana Chronicle, said that it is seeking to purchase three 600 KW generating sets for all-day power supply to the islands. Bidders, according to the advertisement, are required to submit “a detailed and comprehensive bid consisting of Technical and Commercial Proposal and conditions/schedule of non-compliance, if any”.
According to the notice, bid documents can be purchased for a non-refundable fee of $5,000 from the Secretary –Procurement and Inventory Accounting Manager of GPL. The documents could also be downloaded from the company’s website http://www.gplinc.com. The deadline for the submissions is July 22, 2011. All bids are to be submitted to the Secretary of GPL’s Tender Board. The bid security is US$2,000.
Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, while presenting the 2011 budget in January, 2011, said that work would begin in the second half of the year to install two 500 kVA generating sets and Leguan and one 500 kVA set in Wakenaam. For years the islands have suffered from an inadequate power supply.
