The suspect in an armed robbery was shot by police yesterday.
The man, identified as Ishmael Stewart, 28, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention.
Police said that the robbery occurred at around 4:15 pm yesterday at Joe Singh Road, Sophia, during which taxi driver Daniel Ramdeen was attacked and robbed.
According to a police release, investigations revealed that Ramdeen, 48, of Bel Air, Georgetown was hired by a man, who held him at gunpoint and relieved him of two cell phones and $6,000, before making good his escape.
The release stated that quick response by the police to the report resulted in the suspect being intercepted in the Durban Backlands area. During efforts to arrest him, police said, ranks were forced to resort to the use of force, which led to his being shot and injured to his left foot. The stolen articles were recovered.
