Delroy Sookram struck gold for Guyana at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece, which was held from June 25 to July 4.
The prestigious event which attacked 7500 athletes from 1,766 countries saw Sookram blazing the waters to capture gold in the 25 metres backstroke event but he failed to double for his homeland when he misjudged the wall and did not touch it in the 60 metres freestyle event at the meet.
Colleen Roberts who is the other athlete on the team failed to replicate Sookram’s success as she placed fourth in the 25 metres backstroke.
However, while at the opening of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YGB) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) Schools Basketball Championships both the Minister of Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony and Director of Sports Neil Kumar took the time to congratulate Sookram on his success.
“Well I think it’s a good achievement not just for Sookram but for Guyana on the whole and on behalf of the government we congratulate him,” Anthony told Stabroek Sport.
