The British High Commission says it hoped that the recent Olympic Day Fun Walk/Jog and Run exercise hosted by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) last Sunday would inspire the public to participate in sport and exercise.
According to a press release, at the start of the activity, British High Commissioner Simon Bond said preparations are on track for the Olympic and Paralympics Games set for London next year. He also said that Olympic Day reminds the nation of Olympic values and though competition and achievement are important, so is participation. Bond said he hoped that the Olympic Day event would encourage more people to participate in sport and regular exercise, and reap the benefits from same.
According to the release the British High Commission had sponsored the production of T-shirts for the activity. International Olympic Day is held annually on June 23 and is observed in more than 160 countries commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games. Observances are seen not only as a celebration but as effort to promote the Olympic values of fair play, respect, sportsmanship and participation in sport regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.
In addition, the British High Commission will be partnering with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Guyana Boxing Federation to organise events to make the “One Year To Go to the London 2012 Games” which will take place in London from July 27 to August 12, 2012. London is the first city in the world to be hosting the Olympic Games for the third time.
The GOA president and staff along with various members of sport organisations and political parties also attended the meeting.
