The Gentlewomen’s Relief Association is a home that provides boarding and lodging for our elderly ladies in comfortable and pleasant surroundings. The Home has been in existence for over ninety-two years and is located at 106-107 Brickdam, Georgetown.
We would like to take this opportunity to solicit the assistance of the relevant authorities in solving a major problem presently experienced at the Home. During February, 2011 a fire damaged the uninhabited building located on our western border at Croal Street. No effort has been made to demolish the remaining burnt out structure and it has now become a haven for vagrants.
Open fires are lit carelessly in the building for cooking and other purposes and the fire service had to be called on a number of occasions when these fires got out of control. This situation causes great anxiety among the elderly residents. To make matters worse, after each occurrence the vagrants verbally abuse our defenceless residents and recently have resorted to throwing projectiles on the roof of our building. This is cause for serious concern by both the management and residents of the Home. Surely the elderly deserve better in their twilight years.
We, the management committee are therefore appealing to the relevant authorities to rectify this dangerous and intolerable situation as urgently as possible.
