Two men, who allegedly robbed a man of his $2.6M gold chain and pendant, were on Thursday remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown’s Magistrate Court.
It was alleged that on July 4, Devon Alicock, of Lot 33, Albouystown, and Paul Persaud, of 27 James Street, Albouystown, being armed with a gun, robbed the virtual complainant (VC) David Ali of the chain and pendant at Albouystown.
According the prosecution’s facts as presented to the court, on the day in question at 8pm the victim was walking along James Street, Albouystown when the two accused and another man approached. The two accused, armed with a gun, pointed the weapon at Ali and one of the accused snatched the chain and pendant from his neck. The accused then made good their escape. The matter was subsequently reported to the police.
According the prosecutor, Alicock was pointed out at the police station by the victim and he was subsequently arrested. The victim later saw Persaud in the Albouystown area and the police were called in and he was arrested.
Both of the accused told the court that they were innocent. Alicock further stated that at the time of the incident he was at another location.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence and that the court should take into consideration the type of weapon used to commit the crime. Moreover, he stated that if bail was granted to the two men, they are likely not to return to court.
The two men were then remanded to prison by the magistrate and the matter was transferred to Court 5.
