The Georgetown women completed a hat-trick of victories with a commanding 254-run victory in the 4th and final round of the 2011 Female Inter-Association 50-overs cricket tournament at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, yesterday.
Georgetown captain Victoria Bacchus without hesitation elected to take first use of a good looking batting deck. Her batters did not disappoint as they posted the highest total of the competition, amassing an imposing 273 for 6 of the allotted 50 overs.
The majority of the Georgetown batters contributed evenly to the total led by Akazae Thompson, 68; Jocell Joseph, 39; Onika Wallerson, 26, and Latoya Smith, 20, while extras contributed a fair chuck with 86. All the East Coast women were put to the sword suffering dismal figures with only medium pacer Kavita Yadram managing respectability amidst the carnage of 10-1-29-2.
East Coast in reply never came to the party as in a shockingly poor batting display they folded for 29 in 11 overs. Akazae Thompson continued where she left off with the bat to secure the best bowling figures of 3 for 10.
In the day’s other game at DCC, East Coast completed their second victory in two days as they closed off West Bank Demerara convincingly by 67 runs.
Batting first East Coast women posted a respectable 177 for 8 in 50 overs, with number four batter Abina Parker top scoring with 62 and the ever consistent opener and captain June Ogle Thomas with 29. Extras contributed the usual lion’s share of 58. Gangadia Singh and Zaheeda Samdally led the bowling honours for the West Bank with 10-1-48-3 and 10-0-33-2 respectively.
West Bank in reply never built enough partnerships to stay in the hunt for the total, losing wickets at regular intervals to eventually be bowled out for 110 all out in 34.2 overs. Only Jeanette Daniels and Yolanda Maynard 19 and 18 respectively reached double figures, as extras again proved to be the highest contributor with 41.
Hema Singh and Leana Harris were the main wicket takers for the victorious East Coast women with 3 wickets a piece.
This tournament was played with the aim of picking a Demerara side to contest the Inter-County Female overs competition which was scheduled to commence on Monday, but has been postponed until further notice.
