A man accused of stealing his cousin’s car was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of $250,000 after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Elvin Tappin is that on July 5 he stole one motor car valued $2.7M; property of Claudel Fraser.
Tappin, a social worker, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him by the Magistrate.
In presenting the facts of the case, police corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) parked his car and left the key in the ignition while he stepped away to speak with some friends.
She said that while the VC was conversing, Tappin approached and asked him if he was going to Mahaicony and requested a drop there. Responding in the affirmative, Pindar said that the complainant told Tappin that he would be with him in about two minutes.
The court heard that by this time the accused had gone into the car to sit and wait but subsequently drove away.
The matter was later reported to the police and Tappin was arrested and charged.
His matter was transferred to Court and will be called again on July 22.
