Suriname eyeing `green coals’

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – If he gets the required permit from the Surinamese government, entrepreneur Bidjaikoemar Ori wants to start this year with the construction of a facility for so-called ‘green coals’. A combustion process will be used to turn biomass into charcoal. These green coals are considered a replacement for the traditional charcoal that is used as an energy source in many countries. However, the process to manufacture charcoal is very damaging to the environment. “Suriname has enough raw materials for green coals,” Ori says, mentioning lumber waste and bauxite clay from old mining areas as examples.
