A 41-year-old man who snatched a woman’s bag that contained items valued at $58,000 was sentenced to 12 months in prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
On June 29 at Georgetown, Kurt Osbourne stole from Isrania Mangroo one shoulder bag, a bank card, a cell phone and cash totalling $58,000.
According to the facts presented to the court by Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, on the day in question the VC was at Stabroek Market shopping when the defendant came up behind her and snatched her bag containing the items and ran away. Public-spirited citizens in the area raised an alarm and the defendant was subsequently caught and handed over to the police. The labourer pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him and the magistrate sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment.
