Three persons were admitted to hospital yesterday afternoon, following an accident on the Mahaicony railway line involving a police bus and a car.
The driver of the car was identified as Linden Leitch and he reportedly works with the fire service. The other two injured men, including the passenger in Leitch’s car, were not identified. They were admitted as patients at the Georgetown Hospital.
According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred as two police vehicles, a pick-up and a bus, were escorting money. However, the pick-up, which was the only vehicle sounding a siren, sped away from the bus, which was carrying the money.
Subsequently, the bus collided with Leitch’s vehicle at the Mahaicony Bridge. The witness said the driver of the pick-up, after the impact, immediately turned around and returned to the scene. The occupants of the bus then exited their vehicle and escaped in the pick-up.
“The hurtful thing is they ain’t even stop fuh help de people. They left the man lying down on de road and other people had to go fuh help he,” the man stated. The man said that after the car started to smoke, Leitch “jumped out the car.”
Passers-by then helped the injured persons to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where some were treated for minor injuries and sent away while the three men were transferred to the GPH.
Leitch was said to be on duty at the time, carrying passengers. It is unclear as to how many persons were travelling in the car but it was reportedly “packed.”
Meanwhile, at the hospital Leitch and another occupant of his car were complaining of pains in their legs, which were put in casts at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital.
