Demerara ladies defeated their Essequibo counterparts by a massive 283 runs in a one-sided encounter to kick start the 2011 Inter County Women’s 50-over competition at the GCC Ground, Bourda, yesterday.
Winning the toss and taking first strike on a good-looking Bourda batting track at 10:30 am, the Demerara ladies amassed an imposing 293 for 3 in 50 overs.
They were led by their captain’s innings of 131 not out from 159 balls as June Ogle-Thomas continued the impressive batting form she displayed during the Demerara inter-association matches when she represented Georgetown last week.
It was a sorry morning in the field for the Essequibo bowlers as they all finished with just average to poor figures.
Essequibo skipper Shenigh Calvan, Malini Jaikaram and Renika each took one wicket, while bowlers Roopnauth
and Victoria Bacchus suffered the ignominy of being hauled out of the attack at different periods for bowling too many waist high full-tosses.
Essequibo batting in reply was completely obliterated by the new-ball pace attack of Onika Wallerson and Akaze Thompson and was bowled out for an abysmal 10 runs in just 13.4 overs.
Wallerson and Thompson who got 3 and 2 wickets a piece, were supported by Joan Van Sertima and Rudette Williams who also claimed 2 and 3 wickets each.
The scorecard resembled an overseas telephone number as it read 120301200.
Essequibo ladies, however, have no time to dwell on that disgraceful batting effort as they take on Berbice today at the DCC.
