Devon Lee, who pleaded guilty to breaking and entering a gaming shop and stealing more than a half of million dollars worth of property, was yesterday sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Lee, 20, was sentenced by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that between July 11 and July 12, Lee broke and entered the gaming shop of Renard Goberdhan and stole television sets, games and other items, valued $724,000 in total.
The man pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him. He also told the court that he took the police to the location where he kept the stolen items
According to Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, Lee and Goberdhan are known to each other. Lee’s brother, Harvey explained, works for Goberdhan. The court heard that Lee got the game shop key from his brother and entered the business and removed the items mentioned in the charge.
The matter was reported and an investigation was launched, resulting in Lee’s arrest. Harvey confirmed that some of the items were recovered.
In handing down the sentence, the Magistrate took into consideration the fact that Lee cooperated with the police, that some of the items were recovered and that he pleaded guilty to the first instance, saving the court considerable time.
