The Georgetown Cricket Association under-10 kiddies 5 day camp, sponsored by Guyoil and Tradewinds Tankers concluded yesterday at the St.Stanislaus College Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
The camp which attracted 27 participants form the various cricket clubs around the city, children of the sponsors, people who saw the camp advertisement in the newspapers and a few who drove pass the ground during the week and enrolled their kids.
The under 10s were taught the fundamentals of cricket, while having fun. As the Georgetown cricket association for the 1st time have made a conscious effort to try to target youths at a early age to try to keep them interested in cricket at a time when West Indies results and other factors are pulling kids away from cricket.
The sessions were conducted by former West Indies player and coach Roger Harper, his brother and senior Guyana coach Mark Harper,
The were assisted by other coaches in Jason and Gavin Nedd, along with recent Demerara Under-19 cricket team player Neil Barry jr.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport, Roger Harper he was grateful for having 5 full days of sunshine and although he did not expect the kids to retain everything that was taught to them over the 5 days due to their age. He hoped that a substantial amount would have been learnt as he hopes to see them progress.
He also highlighted that the GCA will be hosting a upcoming under-13 tournament this august sponsored by De Sinco trading and a under-19 camp or tournament later in the year.
