The Guyana Chess Federation’s Junior Development programme and West Demerara Outreach tournament received a boost with local beverage Banks DIH sponsoring the two events under the Banks Malta brand.
The GCF will run off an “Introduction to Chess” Workshop on Saturday at the Carifesta Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue starting at 10:00 hours.
President of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall, said the federation’s workshop was geared to bring new players to the sport adding that he was optimistic that young chess enthusiasts will turnout in their numbers at the venue on Saturday.
He is also urging parents to seize the opportunity to bring their children to the programme.
Nandalall said the “Introduction to Chess workshop” will target children between the ages 9-18 years and the registration will start at 09:00 hours.
He said this programme will be conducted by executives of the GCF and expects over 40 youngsters at the one-day event.
On Sunday, the federation will run off the Banks Malta Rapid Chess at the West Demerara Secondary School starting at 10:00 hours.
Nandalall said this is the second community based programme organized by the federation for 2011.
The first was held in May in Linden.
Trophies and Chess sets will be presented to the outstanding players.
Entrance fee for senior players is $200 while junior players will receive free registration.
Banks Malta Brand Manager, Clayton McKenzie, presented the sponsorship cheque to Nandalall during a simple ceremony at Thirst Park yesterday.
McKenzie said that Banks DIH was pleased to be involved in the development of junior chess players and he lauded the federation for the initiative
He said players will be provided with the nutritious non-alcoholic product during both events.
