Despite the fight the Windward Islands put up against challengers Barbados, the Bajans completed a 95-run victory in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Under-19 three-day tourney held at the Demerara Cricket Club ground yesterday.
Right arm leg spinner Chaim Holder, who is not known as a big spinner and did not show any menacing signs accounted for seven wickets that yielded 60 runs from 25 overs. In the end the Windwards batsmen, who were all guilty of throwing their hands away, folded at 230 chasing a target of 326 ending without a point from the game.
Barbados took 12 points to join counterparts Guyana, who completed an easy victory over the Leeward Islands at Providence National Stadium; and Jamaica who beat Trinidad & Tobago at the Everest Cricket Club ground at the top of the pointโs table.
Larry Edward, who took seven wickets in the game bowling spin, was the top scorer with 46. He holed out to long-on after hitting four sixes and a four from his 56 minutes at the crease in partnership with Sunil Ambris (44), brother of Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) player Romel Currency and Dwight Thomas (23). Edward kicked the ground in frustration as the Barbadians smelled victory. Their fielder furthest from the bat was at cover with the others around the bat.
Apart from those scores the Windwards most significant score was at the top of the order from Emmanuel Peter with 29, which came after they were down 65-3, and Keon George (27). After the loss of Edward, wickets fell at regular intervals before the game ended at 4.23pm when Bronte Bess was bowled by Holder for 13, attempting to sweep.
Earlier, Barbados resumed from their overnight score of 293-8 and finished on 312 with Anthony Alleyne, adding 10 to his overnight score to finish on 79 while Mario Rampersaud was left stranded on an even 50. Shane Parris (60) and Neil Browne (36) also contributed valuable scores.
Kavem Hodge was the most successful bowler with 4-80 while Edward had 3-81.
