Issues such as land titling, extension and demarcation are among the priority areas to be discussed during the National Toshaos Conference which will bring together toshaos from 169 hinterland communities from July 25-29 at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal.
Addressing media operatives at a post-Cabinet briefing at the Office of the President Wednesday, Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon said that the conference will allow the voices of Amerindians to be heard as interactions will be held with decision makers, a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.
He announced also that a grand opening of the National Toshaos Conference is slated for Monday at the conference venue.
“Cabinet ministers would be there in their entirety, as well as heads of state agencies whose remit impact on the lives and welfare of Amerindians.
The meeting as before, will be historic particularly in terms of those issues that are currently faced in these communities,” Dr. Luncheon is quoted as saying.
According to the release, the biennial conference which is aimed at consolidating and expanding the national development and transformation processes to cater for the needs of indigenous people, will also address issues which will grant Amerindian communities their constitutional rights.
The previous toshaos conference saw a wide range of matters being discussed that were important to Amerindians, GINA said.
During deliberations 11 Amerindian communities received their land titles including Chinese Landing, Muritaro, Great Falls, Malali, Nappi, St. Ignatius Homestead and St. Ignatius Farmlands, Tobago and Wauna Hill, Karau and Kwebanna.
Presidential grants and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), were also handed over, the release added.
