President Bharrat Jagdeo has sent condolences to the Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg, following yesterday’s bomb attacks in the city of Oslo and the killing of civilians on Utøya Island.
In a statement issued last evening, Jagdeo said that “the Government and people of the Republic of Guyana join me in expressing sincere condolences to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Norway on the loss of innocent lives as a result of the bomb attacks which targeted the city of Oslo and the senseless killings of civilians on Utøya Island.”
The statement added: “The Government of Guyana reiterates its condemnation of the perpetration of terrorist acts and supports the efforts of the Government of Norway in bringing to justice the terrorists responsible for these atrocities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and with the nation of Norway at this time.”
Guyana and Norway are currently partners in a deal worth up to US$250 million for the protection of Guyana’s forests. Under the partnership, Guyana is expected to accelerate its efforts to limit forest-based greenhouse gas emissions and protect its rainforest as an asset for the world, while Norway will provide financial support based on the success in limiting emissions. This will enable Guyana to start implementing its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) at scale.
So far Norway has disbursed US$70 M into the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund, which is administered by the World Bank but no disbursements have been made as yet.
