A man and a woman who allegedly robbed a man of his gold chain were refused bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
According to the charge, on July 26, at Georgetown, being together with another person, Lonnette Layne, of 101 Laing Avenue, Georgetown and Shawn Patterson, of 26 Ozama Street, North Ruimveldt, robbed Suraj Roopnarine of a gold chain, valued $85,000.
Both of the defendants pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them.
According to Prosecutor Venetta Pindar, on the day in question, at 3.30 pm, Roopnarine was on Water Street, in the Tiger Bay area, when the two defendants and another person approached him, slapped him and took his chain.
The police, who were in the area at the time, arrested Layne and Patterson and carried out a search. The chain was found on Patterson’s person, Pindar said, while adding that it has been lodged at the Brickdam Police Station.
Attorney Adrian Thompson, who represented Layne, asked the court that his client be granted bail in a reasonable sum. He further stated that his client was only a vendor who was on the pavement and that she was not at the scene at the time of the incident.
The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the woman was not a first time offender and the nature and the gravity of the offence.
The defendants were remanded to prison and the matter will be called again on August 8.
