A man was yesterday charged with stealing $300,000 from his ex-girlfriend’s bank account.
Carl Higgins was placed on bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Higgins, of Lot V Bent Street, denied the charged that he stole the money from Shauna Wallace, between January 1 and July 6.
Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that Higgins and Wallace shared a relationship. During the month of January, she said, Wallace deposited some money into her bank account but later discovered that some of it was missing. She, however, did not make a report. Subsequently, she returned to the bank in July to make a deposit and she discovered that more of her money was missing. She later made a report to the police and Higgins was subsequently arrested and charged.
When given a chance to explain to the court what had transpired, Higgins told the court that he never took the money without his partner’s knowledge. He added that on some occasions, she would give him her bank card to deposit and withdraw money whenever necessary. He further stated that he never took all of the money “I only took some of the money… She lose she job so she frighten that I ain’t pay her back,” he said.
Higgins pleaded with the court that he be granted some time to repay the money and that he be granted bail. “We both live together, we have $35,000 rent to pay next month,” he said.
The prosecution, however, objected to bail on the grounds that if the man was released from prison it is likely that he would interfere with Wallace, since they were in a relationship before.
The man was later placed on $125,000 bail and the case was adjourned until next Tuesday.
