Mark Vieira takes pole after smashing lap record

Former Group Four champion driver Mar Vieira yesterday signalled that he would be the man to beat today when he smashed the lap record at the South Dakota Circuit yesterday.

The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) will today stage its second race meet for the year and  motor racing fans are expected to be in for a treat.

Vieira, is returning to the track after a brief absence.

Yesterday, the slimly built driver erased the old mark of 34.898 seconds which was set by another former Group Four champion driver Andrew King.

Vieira’s time was 34.361 seconds and it allows  him pole position for today’s encounter with King who clocked 34.400 starting  second on the grid.

Reigning champion, Kevin Jeffrey clocked 34.409 and Paul Vieira 34.428 and will occupy the third and fourth spots on the grid respectively.

Vieira told media operatives shortly after smashing the lap record  that he will  go even faster today.

The local speed ace  is eyeing  the upcoming second leg of the Caribbean Series where reigning champion Jamaican David Summerbell Jnr enjoys a handy lead in the individual competition.

In Group 3, Trinidad’s  Ravi Singh,  occupies pole position courtesy of his 36.413 while Danny Persaud 36.752 and Gavin Gayadin  are second and third on the grid respectively.

In the super bike class Stephen Vieira clocked  35.363 while Gregory Lopes will be alongside him after clocking 35.407 and Maurice Menezes in third spot with 36. 361s.

Patrons are urged to use the highway entrance to the circuit after yesterday’s  airport mishap.

The event begins at 8:30 with the lap of honor.
