The Mayor and City Council (MCC) says garbage contractors again withdrew their services from the city on Monday because of a delay in payment; however, it will soon restart its own garbage collection with two compactor trucks it recently procured.
In a press release the MCC said the delay in payment is a direct result of its narrow revenue base which continues to affect all its operations including the collection of garbage, drainage, health services and other essential municipal services.
It contends too that its financial difficulties are further exacerbated by property owners who default on paying their rates and taxes.
The municipality said it spends about $1M per day to collect the city’s waste and at this time it is not in a position to pay contractors. However, it assures the public that every effort is being made to mobilize its trucks and equipment to collect refuse from certain areas.
The Council has procured two garbage compactor trucks, to re-start its own garbage collection which will be done using a phased approach in different sections of the city.
