Headquarters surged to the front on points in the ‘B’ Class competition of the annual Guyana Police Force (GPF) Inter Unit Championships while Guyana stood strong in the ‘A’ class version when the championships commenced yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Headquarters (HQ) amassed a total of 95 points to stand clear of ‘A’ Division, ‘B’ Division, and ‘C’ Division on 63, 33 and 22 points respectively in the ‘B’ class competition while Guyana leads Trinidad 71 to 15 points in the ‘A’ class competition.
The day saw some intense action as Trevor Scotland outclassed the field in the men’s ‘A’ class 800 metres winning in 2:04.2s ahead of Dennis Horatio, 2:07.3s and Larry Josiah 2:08.3s.
Ronald Payne then threw away the men’s ‘A’ class discus with a best throw of 37.04 metres that was superior to Michael Pollydore’s throw of 34.35m while Collis Fraser won the ‘B’ class discus with a throw of 34.78m. The men’s ‘B’ class long jump saw a tough battle between Troy Williams and Trevor Benn with Williams emerging as the victor with a jump of 6.25m while Benn finished with a 6.21 jump.
Keith Roberts jumped away with the men’s ‘A’ class long jump with a distance of 5.79m ahead of Josiah with a jump of 5.35m.
The Women’s 3000 metres saw Janella Jonas winning easily in 12:30.0s ahead of Eva Henry 12:53.0s and Samantha Williams 14:23.7s. Earlier in the day, Terry Easton clocked 11.1s to win heat one of the men ‘B’ class 100 metres while Benn clocked 10.9s ahead of Derwin Eastman to win heat two.
Eastman later returned to win heat two of the men’s ‘B’ class 400 metres in 54.00s while Shawn Semple comfortably clocked 52.7s to win heat one.
The women’s 100 metres saw Nadine Rodrigues taking heat one in 12.7s ahead of Shannah Thornhill while Leota Babb had to make up ground after a poor start but finished comfortably to win heat two in 12.6s.
Meanwhile, the Inter Unit Championships will continue today from 10:00hrs at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
