Reigning national champion Taffin Khan finds himself in the lead of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Emancipation Day Chess Tournament after the fourth round concluded on Sunday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, Camp and Hadfield Streets.
Khan, who has a FIDE (World Chess Federation) rating of 1802, secured four straight wins following his defeat of his father David Khan, whom he defeated in the third round of the tournament on Sunday.
David Khan (1386) is in second place with three points having won all of his other matches.
Also on three points are Maria Thomas and Shiv Nandalall (1715).
Thomas’ only loss also came against Taffin Khan, whom she played in the fourth round.
Taffin Khan had begun the tournament on Saturday with a win against junior player Rashad Hussain and he followed up that victory with another win against Saeed Ali in the second round.
David Khan’s wins came against Roberto Neto, Anthony Drayton and Joshua Pedro respectively.
Thomas scored a major upset when she defeated Nandalall in the third round after disposing of Joshua Chan and Rashad Hussain in rounds one and two respectively. (Tamica Garnett)
