Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton remanded a man accused of an armed robbery when he appeared on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Wendell Maynard is that on July 18, at Georgetown, being armed with a gun, he robbed Clive Daniels of $230,000. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery under arms, when it was read to him.
The accused, when given a chance to speak, began by asking the magistrate if the court system was about justice and fairness. In response, Magistrate Octave-Hamilton firmly told him that he was standing in her court, which was concerned only with administering justice.
Maynard then told the court that he was beaten by a policeman, whom he identified in the courtroom. He said that he sustained injuries about his back and head.
After being invited by the magistrate into the well of the court, the accused took off his jersey, after which the magistrate recorded the injuries she saw.
She told the court that she saw “one fresh wound” in the middle of the defendant’s back and stated that the others were “old ones.”
No details of what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court. However, Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey asked the court to deny the accused his pre-trial liberty.
Maynard was ordered to appear in Court One on September 13.
