A 37-year-old man died yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after he was beaten the night before at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Ramjeet ‘Krishna’ Dindiyal, 37, according to a police press release, was walking along the roadway around 10:00pm when he was struck behind his head by a man. The suspect, the release said, is in police custody.
Dindiyal’s aunt Golin, with whom he spent most of his days, told this newspaper that her nephew was at her home playing dominoes earlier on in the day but left around 5 pm with two of his friends from the neighbourhood.
“He and de two boys left before it get dark and meh nah see meh nephew back since,” the woman solemnly said.
The woman explained that around 12:20 am the following morning, she was awakened by the police. “Some black clothes police come and blow so I run out meh bed and went to the verandah and they tell me to go down stairs and when I go fuh open de gate, they tell me don’t fight up with all of that,” she recalled.
She added that the police then inquired into her relationship with Dindiyal and later informed her that he was admitted to the GPH. “I went back in me bed and meh nah sleep till day clean,” the woman said.
She added that three police vehicles arrived at her home around 6 am yesterday, with officers again inquiring how she was related to Dindiyal. “Then one of them ask me if I know that he pass away and another police holler `boy what u telling de woman, you want she fall down…’ I start trembling right away,” Golin recalled.
“They tell me they want me at de station so I went with them and told them what I know,” the woman said.
The dead man’s aunt said that she was told he was last seen at a Chinese Restaurant in Lusignan.
She added that one of the individuals he had left her home with was at the police station assisting with investigations.
Dindiyal’s sister, Meena, said that she noticed his face was badly bruised when she went to the mortuary to identify the body. “People say he get hit behind his head and was beaten so I assume is when he fall he face get bruise up,” she opined.
The post-mortem examination is expected to be done tomorrow.
Meanwhile, relatives of the deceased described him as a very quiet and decent person. “He was not a person who used to fight with people but he like take his drinks,” his sister stated.
Dindiyal, relatives said, did not have a stable job but worked for various persons. “He used to wash people car, weed de yard and so to get his money to buy his lil drinks,” his sister said.
The man was never married nor does he have any children and according to relatives, did not have a fixed place of abode. Instead, he used to spend his time at the homes of his family. (Frances Abraham)
