Guyana women’s team soared into the lead with a 6-0 drubbing of Bermuda in their penultimate match of the round robin competition at the Pan American hockey Challenge Cup in neighbouring Brazil.
It was a dominant performance for the Guyanese who will face Uruguay on Friday to decide on the two teams to clash in Saturday’s final.
Guyana’s captain Chantelle Fernandes led from the front with a double opening her team scoring in the 10th minute with a penalty stroke.
Dominique De Groot pushed her team further into the lead in the 21st minute from a penalty corner and one minute later Marzana Fiedtkou netted from the penalty mark to give Guyana a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time.
On the resumption, Fernandes scored again while Leigh and Gabriella Xavier scored one each for the victorious Guyana side.
Guyana lead with seven points followed by Uruguay with six points, Brazil four while Paraguay and Bermuda remain without a point.
Guyana also have a superior goal average than closest rivals Brazil.
The top two teams from the round robin stage will meet in the final on Saturday and will earn the right to compete in the Pan American playoff of the 2013 World Cup qualification competition joining the United States, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico.
