GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – West Indies Cricket Board cricket operations officer Rawl Lewis has praised the development seminar held here recently for players in the ongoing WICB Under-19 Championship.
Hosted by the WICB, the seminar treated topics such as proper preparation and maintaining fitness, injury prevention, anti-doping and media relations, and was attended by members of all six teams currently contesting the tournament.
Lewis said the seminar was aimed at helping players to “develop and improve their cricket as they graduate from one stage to the next”.
“It is important that we continue to assist and support the players across the region,” said Lewis, also the tournament coordinator.
“We had several seminars like this before and we aim to put systems in place make West Indies cricket better at all levels.”
A former West Indies and Windward Islands leg-spinner, Lewis urged the players to be good ambassadors for their countries and for West Indies cricket.
WICB player relations officer, Ayana Cooper also addressed the players, stressing the need to be fully aware of their conduct on and off the field.
She said they needed to “maintain the integrity of the game and to avoid pitfalls” as they balanced their careers with their personal lives. Karen Pilgrim, Doping Control Officer for the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation, addressed the issue of performance-enhancing substances in sport while Janel Springer, the Barbados and West Indies Under-19 physiotherapist, spoke on fitness and diet in cricket. Philip Spooner, the West Indies team’s media manager, hosted a media workshop.
